Sprinter vans: fender liner can rub through brake hose

NHTSA campaign 20V181000 · Reported 2020-03-25 · Daimler Vans USA, LLC

high How serious is it? About this label

This is serious because it affects your ability to stop; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but if the pedal feels soft or low, or you see fluid under the front wheels, get the van looked at right away.

What's wrong, in plain English

The plastic liner behind the front wheels on these 2019 Sprinter vans can rub against the rubber brake hose. Over time that rubbing wears a hole in the hose, and brake fluid can leak out. With less fluid, the brakes lose pressure, so the van takes longer to stop when you press the pedal. Dealers will check the brake hoses and replace any that are damaged, and they will also reshape the fender liners so the rubbing stops.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your van is included.
2. Call a Mercedes-Benz or Freightliner Sprinter dealer, or DVUSA at 1-877-762-8267, and ask for recall VS3BRADVER.
3. Have the brake hoses inspected and the fender liners modified — the repair is free.
