In the event of a crash, the passenger air bag may not properly deploy and inflate, and small plastic parts may enter the cabin, increasing the risk of injury. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

The front passenger airbag is packed inside the dashboard and is meant to burst out through a hidden seam when it inflates. On these vehicles, that seam may not tear open the way it should. In a crash, the airbag may not open and fill correctly, so it may not protect the passenger as designed. Small pieces of plastic from the dashboard could also be thrown into the cabin. Dealers replace the whole dashboard panel at no cost.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your car is included. 2. Call an Audi dealer to book the free instrument panel replacement, or reach Audi customer service at 1-800-822-2834 (recall 70H6). 3. Keep the appointment even if everything seems normal, since there is no way to see the problem from inside the car.

Remedy
Audi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the instrument panels, free of charge. The recall began June 24, 2020. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-822-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 70H6.
