Why do Audi passenger airbags switch off or fail to deploy?
Fourteen Audi airbag recalls, and the dominant pattern is the Passenger Occupant Detection System. Five separate campaigns — covering the A3/S3/RS3, A4/A5/S4/S5, A6/A7/S6, and a 2023-2024 wave sweeping the Q3, Q5, Q7 and Q8 — describe corroded, loose or faulty PODS connectors, wiring, control modules or seat sensor mats that switch the front passenger airbag off while someone is sitting there. The second pattern is the airbag's path out of the dash: instrument panel tear seams and score lines on the 2019 Q3, 2019 Q5/SQ5 and 2019-2021 A6/A7. A third is hardware assembly: head curtain airbags on the 2018 A5 and 2019 Q7, a loose mounting screw on the 2018 A5 and A4 Allroad, and a driver's seat side airbag on the 2023-2024 Q7 and Q8.
Warning signs to watch for
- The passenger airbag OFF light stays lit even with an adult in the front seat
- An airbag or restraint system warning appears on the instrument cluster
- For the tear seam, score line, curtain airbag and mounting defects there is no warning at all — the fault only shows itself in a crash
- Nothing changes in how the car drives; none of these recalls affects steering, braking or power
Is it safe to keep driving?
No Audi airbag recall in this group tells owners to stop driving or to park outside, and none affects how the vehicle drives. The risk appears only in a crash. Audi's notices do add precautions for the occupant detection recalls: if the passenger airbag-off light stays on, avoid seating anyone in the front passenger seat until the repair is finished. For the 2020-2021 Q7 deployment-timing recall, keep children properly buckled and ideally in the back seat.
What the free repair involves
It varies by campaign. Occupant detection recalls bring a new sensor mat, control module, connector, repair kit, rerouted cable or added cable ties. Deployment-path recalls mean inspecting or replacing the instrument panel, and sometimes the passenger airbag itself. Others modify or replace the curtain airbags, reinstall the driver's seat side airbag, tighten a mounting screw, or update the airbag control module software. All free at an Audi dealer.

My passenger airbag light reads OFF with an adult seated — is that this recall?
That is exactly the symptom Audi's occupant detection recalls describe, on everything from the A3 to the Q8. Have your VIN checked with Audi customer service, and until the repair is done, seat passengers in the rear rather than the front.
Will my airbag work at all before the recall repair?
It depends on the defect. Occupant detection faults can switch the passenger airbag off entirely, so it will not deploy. Tear seam, score line, curtain and mounting defects let the airbag fire but not unfold or deploy properly, which reduces crash protection.
Why does one Audi airbag recall list so many different models?
Audi shares seats, wiring connectors and instrument panels across its lineup, so a single faulty part sweeps in sedans, cabriolets and SUVs together. The April 2024 occupant detection recall alone spans the A3, A4 Allroad, Q3, Q5, Q7, Q8, TT and e-tron.
