This one is serious — steering assist can disappear while you are driving; the notice does not say to park the van, but get it inspected quickly and have any fluid leak looked at right away.

What's wrong, in plain English

The hose that returns fluid to the power steering system can come loose where it connects, letting steering fluid leak out. If that happens you can suddenly lose power steering assist, which makes the wheel very hard to turn with little warning. The leaking fluid can also spill onto the road and make it slippery for you and for other drivers. A dealer will check the return line connections and fix them as needed, free of charge.

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your van is included.
2. Schedule an inspection with a Mercedes-Benz or Freightliner Sprinter dealer, referencing campaign NV3LETULPE, or call 1-877-762-8267.
3. Have the power steering return line connections checked and corrected — the work is free.

Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Mercedes Benz Sprinter and Freightliner Sprinter vehicles. The hydraulic power steering return line hoses may detach at their connection points under certain operating conditions, causing hydraulic fluid to leak.
Safety risk
The sudden loss of power steering assist and hydraulic steering fluid leaking onto the roadway may increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
DVUSA will notify owners, and dealers will check the return line connections of the power steering system, correcting it as needed, free of charge. The recall began December 23, 2020. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267. DVUSA's number for this campaign is NV3LETULPE.
