This is serious — brakes that need extra pedal travel to work can lead to a crash, and while the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, you should get the van in right away and be especially careful if the pedal feels low or soft.

What's wrong, in plain English

On some 2019-2020 Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner Sprinter vans with electric parking brakes, the rear brake calipers can leak brake fluid into the parking brake housing. Once fluid escapes, air gets into the brake lines. Air squishes when you press the pedal, so the pedal can sink much farther toward the floor than normal before the van slows down. The dealer will replace the rear brake calipers at no cost to you.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your van is included in recall VS3BREPB.
2. Call a Mercedes-Benz/Freightliner Sprinter dealer or Daimler Vans USA at 1-877-762-8267 and ask for the earliest appointment.
3. Have the rear brake calipers replaced — the repair is completely free.

Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Freightliner Sprinter vehicles equipped with electric parking brakes. The rear brake calipers may leak brake fluid into the housing of the electric parking brake connected to the rear axle service brake system, allowing air to enter the hydraulic brake system.
Safety risk
Air in the brake system can result in extended brake pedal travel, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
DVUSA will replace the rear brake calipers, free of charge. Owners notification letters were mailed on January 4, 2022. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267. DVUSA's number for this recall is VS3BREPB.
