Mercedes-Benz Sprinter may lose power steering from leaking hose

NHTSA campaign 21V241000 · Reported 2021-04-06 · Daimler Vans USA, LLC

high How serious is it? About this label

This one is serious because the steering can go heavy without warning, so get the van in quickly and stop driving it if you see fluid leaking or the steering suddenly stiffens.

What's wrong, in plain English

A hose that carries fluid back from the power steering system may come loose and let the fluid leak out. Without that fluid, the steering can suddenly become very heavy while you are driving. The van still steers, but it takes far more muscle than you expect, and a sudden change like that can make you lose control. A dealer will install a screw-type clamp to hold the hose in place, at no cost.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your van is included. 2. Call Daimler Vans USA at 1-877-762-8267 (recall NV3LETULPX) or your dealer for an appointment. 3. Have the clamp installed — the repair is free.
