Ford Transit Connect shifter bushing can fail, van rolls

NHTSA campaign 21V376000 · Reported 2021-05-24 · Ford Motor Company

high How serious is it? About this label

Serious — a van that rolls away in Park or moves the wrong way can cause a crash or injury; the notice does not tell you to stop driving, but this one should be fixed right away.

What's wrong, in plain English

A small plastic part connects the gear shifter to the transmission. On these vans it can wear out, crack, or fall off. When that happens the van may not actually go into the gear you picked, so it could move in a direction you did not expect. Worse, it can roll away after you shift into Park, even though the shifter says Park. A dealer replaces the part and adds a protective cap, free.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your van is affected.
2. Contact any Ford dealer, or Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332, and reference recall 21S24.
3. Have the shifter cable bushing replaced — there is no charge to you.

Summary
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2013-2021 Transit Connect vehicles equipped with 2.5L engines. The bushing that attaches the shifter cable to the transmission may degrade or detach.
Safety risk
A damaged or missing bushing may prevent the vehicle from shifting into the intended gear, causing the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. Additionally, the vehicle may roll after the driver selects the 'Park' position. Either scenario increases the risk of a crash or injury.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the underhood shifter cable bushing, and add a protective cap, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on June 29, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 21S24.
