Mercedes Sprinter swivel seat wiring can disable side airbag

NHTSA campaign 21V410000 · Reported 2021-06-02 · Daimler Vans USA, LLC

high How serious is it? About this label

Damage to the wiring harness can prevent the side air bag within the seat to deploy inadvertently or not deploy as designed, increasing the risk of injury. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

Some Sprinter vans built with swivel front seats may have the seat wiring routed the wrong way. When the seat turns, the wires can get pinched or jammed in the seat frame and damaged. Those wires run to the side airbag built into the seat. If they are damaged, that airbag may go off when it should not, or fail to go off in a crash. A dealer moves the wiring clip to the correct spot at no charge.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your van is included.
2. Call a Mercedes-Benz/Freightliner Sprinter dealer, or Daimler Vans USA at 1-877-762-8267 (recall VS3DREHSEL), for an appointment.
3. Have the wiring clip repositioned — the repair is free.
