Mercedes-Benz Sprinter screen may go black, hiding backup camera

NHTSA campaign 21V411000 · Reported 2021-06-02 · Daimler Vans USA, LLC

medium How serious is it? About this label

Moderate, because a blank backup camera reduces your view behind a large van and raises crash risk; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

The software that runs the dashboard touchscreen can leave the screen black or make it restart after the van is started. When that happens, the backup camera picture may not appear, so the driver cannot see what is behind the van while reversing. Certain 2019-2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Freightliner Sprinter vans are covered. The fix is a free software update, done either at a dealer or sent to the van over the air.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your van is included. 2. Contact your Sprinter dealer or customer service at 1-877-762-8267 and mention recall VS3UXPOBOX. 3. Have the multimedia software updated at the dealer or accept the over-the-air update, which is free of charge.

Summary
Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2019-2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Freightliner Sprinter vehicles. The MBUX multimedia system software may cause the display to remain black, or reboot after startup. This could result in the rearview camera image not displaying properly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Safety risk
A backup camera that displays a blank image reduces the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
Remedy
The multimedia system software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. DVUSA issued owners an interim notification on July 23, 2021. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267. DVUSA's number for this recall is VS3UXPOBOX. (over-the-air software update)

Verify your specific vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov. Recall repairs are free of charge by law.
