Toyota Tundra and Sequoia may lose power steering assist

NHTSA campaign 21V920000 · Reported 2021-11-23 · Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing

high How serious is it? About this label

Serious, because losing steering assist without warning makes the truck much harder to control; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but get it inspected soon and watch for stiff steering or oil leaks.

What's wrong, in plain English

The power steering gear — the part that makes the wheel easy to turn — may have been built incorrectly at the factory, so its oil can leak out. If enough oil escapes, the steering can suddenly get much harder to turn while you are driving, which can catch you off guard in a turn or at speed. A dealer will inspect the part and replace it for free if needed. Owner letters were mailed in January 2022.
