Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans can roll away after shifting to Park

NHTSA campaign 21V972000 · Reported 2021-12-15 · Daimler Vans USA, LLC

high How serious is it? About this label

Unintentional vehicle movement can increase the risk of a crash. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

A software glitch in the van's park lock means putting the shifter in 'P' may not actually hold the van still. If you don't also set the parking brake, the van can move on its own after you shift into Park and step away. The repair is a free software update to the control unit that manages the stability system. Until that is done, always set the parking brake when you park.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your van is included.
2. Call a Mercedes-Benz or Freightliner Sprinter dealer, or Daimler Vans USA at 1-877-762-8267 (recall VS3PA27), and book the software update.
3. The update is free; always apply the parking brake until it is installed.
