Missing a warning light or message means you might not know about a problem with the car, which raises the chance of a crash; BMW has not told owners to stop driving, and the issue only shows up in Valet Parking Mode.

What's wrong, in plain English

BMW is recalling certain 2022-2023 iX and 2022 i4 electric vehicles. These cars have a Valet Parking Mode that limits what someone parking your car can do. While that mode is on, the big center screen may fail to show important safety information, such as warning messages and warning lights. That means a driver could miss an alert about a problem with the car. Dealers will update the screen's software for free, and letters went out September 6, 2022.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your car is covered.
2. Contact your BMW dealer or BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 to schedule the display software update.
3. Get the update installed - it costs you nothing.

Summary
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2022-2023 iX xDrive40, iX xDrive50, iX M60, 2022 i4 eDrive40, and i4 M50 vehicles equipped with hybrid electric powertrains. While in Valet Parking Mode, the Central Information Display (CID) may not display critical safety information, such as warning messages and/or warning lights. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 101, "Control and Displays."
Safety risk
A display that does not show critical information, such as warning messages and/or warning lights, can increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will update the display's head unit software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 6, 2022. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
