A rollaway can cause a crash or injury, and the notice does not tell owners to stop driving, but it does make clear you should always set the parking brake when you park until the drive unit is replaced.

What's wrong, in plain English

This recall covers a single 2023 iX M60. A gear inside the electric drive unit may have a bad weld. If that weld breaks, the drive unit can no longer hold the vehicle still, so the car could roll away on its own if the parking brake is not set. BMW will replace the entire electric drive unit at no cost. Owners were sent a letter warning them about the safety risk before the full notice went out.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling one 2023 iX M60 hybrid electric vehicle. The transmission final drive gear in the electric drive unit may have an improperly manufactured weld seam.
Safety risk
The gear weld seam could break, resulting in a vehicle rollaway if the parking brake is not applied, and increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy
A dealer will replace the electric drive unit, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed on November 30, 2022. The owner notification letter is expected to be mailed November 28, 2022. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
