Kia Sportage may lose power brake assist while driving

NHTSA campaign 23V410000 · Reported 2023-06-07 · Kia America, Inc.

high How serious is it? About this label

Longer stopping distances are dangerous in traffic, so this is serious, though the notice does not tell owners to stop driving the vehicle.

What's wrong, in plain English

Certain 2023 Kia Sportage vehicles have a part called the brake booster, which uses engine vacuum to make the brake pedal easy to press. A rubber piece inside it can shift out of position and let air leak in. When that happens, the power assist is lost, the brake pedal feels much harder to push, and the vehicle takes a longer distance to come to a stop.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if your Sportage is affected. 2. Contact your Kia dealer or Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 about recall SC272. 3. Have the dealer inspect the brake booster and replace it if needed, free of charge.
