Kia Sportage may lose power steering assist suddenly

NHTSA campaign 24V422000 · Reported 2024-06-07 · Kia America, Inc.

high How serious is it? About this label

A sudden change in steering effort can cause you to lose control and crash, so this is serious; the notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

Certain 2024 Kia Sportage vehicles have an electronic circuit board inside the power steering unit that can short out. That unit is what makes the steering wheel easy to turn. If the board fails, you lose the power assist and the steering wheel becomes much heavier and harder to turn, which is especially noticeable at low speeds, when parking, or when you need to steer quickly.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is covered. 2. Call your Kia dealer or Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 and mention recall SC319. 3. Have the dealer replace the power steering electric power pack, free of charge.
