Toyota Camry lug nuts may loosen and wheel detach

NHTSA campaign 23V432000 · Reported 2023-06-15 · Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing

critical How serious is it? About this label

Extremely serious — a wheel can come off with no warning, so Toyota says do not drive the vehicle until the repair is done.

⚠ NHTSA advises not driving this vehicle until it is repaired. See all such recalls.

What's wrong, in plain English

The nuts that hold the wheels on these Camry and Camry Hybrid cars may not be tight enough. A loose wheel can work its way off while you are driving, which can make you lose control of the car. Toyota says not to drive these vehicles at all until they are fixed. A dealer will check and tighten every lug nut, and replace any parts that were damaged, at no cost to you.

What you should do

1. Stop driving the car and check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm it is affected.
2. Call a Toyota dealer or Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 (recall 23TA05) and explain you were told not to drive it — ask about towing.
3. Have the dealer tighten the lug nuts and replace any damaged parts, free of charge.
