Why do Toyota wheels keep coming loose on new models?

Toyota's wheel recalls are few but unusually severe — two of the three carry do-not-drive warnings. The 2023 bZ4X, and its twin the Subaru Solterra, can lose a wheel because the hub bolts loosen after only low-mileage use. The 2023 Camry and Camry Hybrid were built with lug nuts that may be loose, again ending in wheel detachment. The third recall covers 2018 Sienna minivans built with one lot of 10-spoke alloy wheels from a single production facility; those wheels were not properly cooled during manufacturing and may crack in the spokes. The pattern is narrow: nearly new 2018 and 2023 vehicles, failing right where the wheel attaches to the car.

Is it safe to keep driving?
Two of these are do-not-drive recalls. Toyota tells owners of the 2023 bZ4X and Subaru Solterra, and of the 2023 Camry and Camry Hybrid, not to drive the vehicle at all until the repair is done, because a wheel can detach and cause loss of control. The 2018 Sienna recall carries no park-it or stop-driving order, so you may keep driving, but the notice urges getting the wheels inspected quickly and avoiding hard impacts such as potholes and curbs in the meantime.
What the free repair involves
The work differs by recall. For the bZ4X and Solterra, dealers replace the hub bolts and the wheels. On the 2023 Camry and Camry Hybrid, they inspect and tighten the lug nuts and replace any damaged components. For the 2018 Sienna, they inspect the alloy wheels and replace them if necessary, depending on what the inspection finds. All of this is free of charge.

Common questions
My Camry drives fine — do I really have to stop driving it?
Yes. Toyota's notice says do not drive the vehicle until the repair has been performed, because the lug nuts may be loose and a wheel can come off with no warning. Arrange to get it to a dealer rather than driving it there.
How do I know if my 2018 Sienna has the recalled wheels?
Only a dealer can confirm it by VIN. The recall covers a specific lot of 10-spoke alloy wheels from one production facility. Toyota began notifying owners by phone in February 2018 and mailed letters to anyone not reached starting that April.
Does the bZ4X wheel recall cover the Subaru Solterra too?
Yes. Toyota is recalling certain 2023 Solterra and bZ4X vehicles together for the same loosening hub bolts. Owners of both were advised not to drive until dealers replace the hub bolts and wheels at no cost, with letters mailed June 27, 2022.
