Jeep Wrangler plug-in hybrid battery can catch fire

Very serious — a fire can start with no warning even when the car is off, so Chrysler does not order you to stop driving, but it does say to stop charging and to park outside away from buildings until the repair is done.

What's wrong, in plain English

Your Wrangler is a plug-in hybrid, so it carries a large battery under the vehicle. On these vehicles that battery can break down inside itself and start a fire — either while you are driving or while the car sits parked and switched off. Chrysler says to stop plugging it in to charge, and to park it outdoors, away from your house, garage, carport or anything else that could burn, until a dealer fixes it. The dealer updates the battery software and replaces the battery pack if needed.

What you should do

1. Stop charging the vehicle now, and park it outside and away from your home, garage or any other structure.
2. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your Wrangler is included (note this recall has been superseded by recall 24V-720, so check for that one too).
3. Call your Jeep dealer, or FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403 (recall 89A), and book the repair — it is free.

Summary
Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2021-2023 Jeep Wrangler Plug-In Hybrid Electric (PHEV) vehicles. The high voltage battery may fail internally and lead to a vehicle fire while parked or driving.
Safety risk
A vehicle fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
Remedy
Owners are advised not to recharge their vehicles, and to park outside and away from structures, until they are repaired. Dealers will update the high voltage battery pack software and replace the battery pack assembly if necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 7, 2024. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is 89A. This recall is superseded by NHTSA Recall 24V-720.
