Jeep electrical recalls: 4xe battery fires and blank instrument clusters

These fifteen recalls split into two clusters. The serious one is the plug-in hybrid high voltage battery: 2021-2023 Wrangler PHEV, then 2020-2025 Wrangler 4xe and 2022-2026 Grand Cherokee 4xe, where the battery can fail internally and cause a fire while parked or driving; the September 2024 version was replaced by NHTSA recall 25V741. Related 4xe faults include incorrect fasteners securing the 200-amp battery fuse on 2022-2023 Wranglers, recalled twice, and a hybrid control processor software error that cuts drive power on Grand Cherokee PHEVs. The second cluster is instrument panels: cluster failure on 2019 Cherokees, dim or unadjustable displays on 2022-2023 Compass, internal shorts on 2018-2024 Wrangler and Gladiator, a wrong speedometer reading on 2024 Grand Cherokees, and blank panels on Wagoneer S EVs. Two older fleet-wide recalls cover stuck cruise control and stalling.
Warning signs to watch for
- Gauges, warning chimes or the whole instrument cluster going dark or failing, on 2019 Cherokee, 2018-2024 Wrangler and Gladiator, and Wagoneer S.
- A dashboard center display too dim to see in daytime, or brightness you cannot adjust, on 2022-2023 Compass.
- A speedometer showing the wrong vehicle speed, on 2024 Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L.
- The engine stalling without warning, or cruise control that will not shut off, on the older fleet-wide recalls.
- The 4xe battery fire recalls describe no warning at all — a fire can start while the vehicle is parked.
Is it safe to keep driving?
Treat the 4xe recalls differently. Chrysler does not order owners to stop driving, but on the plug-in hybrid battery fire recalls it does say to stop charging the vehicle and to park outside, away from structures, until the remedy is completed. On the 2018 cruise control recall, do not use cruise control until the repair; if it ever will not shut off, brake firmly and steadily, shift to neutral, then park. Every other recall here places no restriction on driving.
What the free repair involves
All repairs are free. The 4xe battery recalls pair a high voltage battery software update with replacement of the fuse or the battery pack assembly where inspection finds it necessary. Drive power, speedometer, cluster brightness and Wagoneer S display faults are reprogramming jobs. Hardware recalls replace the instrument cluster or powertrain control module, or on the 2022 Compass add a light sensor module, wiring jumper, windshield and headlamp switch.

Common questions
I already had my 4xe battery recall repair done. Am I finished?
Not necessarily. The September 2024 recall was replaced by NHTSA recall 25V741, and vehicles already repaired under the earlier remedy need the new remedy completed. Until it is done, keep parking outside away from structures and do not charge.
Can I charge my Wrangler 4xe while waiting for the repair?
No. Chrysler advises owners not to recharge affected plug-in hybrids, and to park outside away from structures until the remedy is complete, because the high voltage battery can fail internally and lead to a fire parked or driving.
Is a dim or dead instrument cluster really a safety recall?
Yes. The Compass, Wrangler, Gladiator, Grand Cherokee and Wagoneer S display recalls are filed as failures to meet federal motor vehicle safety standards, because you cannot read warning lights, fuel level or speed. None restricts driving, and all are repaired free.
