Mercedes-Benz Sprinter rear axle bolts may weaken and shift

NHTSA campaign 24V517000 · Reported 2024-07-09 · Daimler Vans USA, LLC

high How serious is it? About this label

Losing control of a loaded van is serious; the notice does not tell owners to park it, but this repair should not wait, especially if you carry heavy loads.

What's wrong, in plain English

On these Sprinter vans, the U-shaped bolts that clamp the rear axle to the leaf springs were heat-treated incorrectly at the factory, so they are weaker than they should be. If a weak bolt stretches or breaks, the rear axle can shift out of place. When that happens, the van can become unstable and the driver can lose control. A dealer will replace the U-bolts with correctly made ones, free.
