Volvo VN trucks: loose engine gear bolts can stall engine

NHTSA campaign 25V257000 · Reported 2025-04-17 · Volvo Trucks North America

high How serious is it? About this label

Serious: there is no order to stop driving, but the engine can quit while you are on the road and cause a crash or injury, so schedule the inspection right away.

What's wrong, in plain English

Inside the engine of these Volvo trucks, a gear called the idler gear is held in place by bolts on a bracket. Those bolts may not have been tightened properly. If they loosen, the gear can come away from the engine and tear up parts inside it. The engine can then stall, leaving you without power in traffic. Dealers will inspect the truck and replace the turbo compound unit if needed, at no cost to you.
