The software that runs the electric drive motor can shut down the high-voltage system. If that happens, the vehicle loses drive power and will not pull, even though you are still steering and moving. BMW is fixing this with a software update. For many owners it arrives over the air, downloaded by the car itself, and a dealer can also install it. Either way there is no cost. Notification letters went out in August 2025.
The big battery that powers these electric cars is built from smaller blocks called modules. Some modules may have been put together wrong at the factory, which puts stress on the module's frame and can make it fail. If one fails, the car's high-voltage system can shut down and you can lose power to the wheels while driving. A failed module can also catch fire. Dealers will replace the affected modules for free.
The combined charging unit is the box that handles power for the high-voltage battery in these electric and hybrid models. On some vehicles it was not built correctly at the factory, with parts inside improperly connected or assembled. If that happens, electrical power can be interrupted while you are driving and the vehicle can stall, leaving you without power in traffic. Dealers will replace the high-voltage battery charging unit with a new one, free of charge.
This recall covers cars that had an electronic control module replaced during a service visit. The replacement part may have been loaded with the wrong software, and that mistake can stop the automatic door locking feature from locking the doors once you start driving. Doors that are not locked are more likely to come open in a crash, which can let someone be thrown out of the car. A dealer reloads the correct software.
Electric cars are nearly silent at low speed, so federal rules require them to make an artificial sound that warns people nearby. On these i4 and iX models, the control unit that creates that sound can fail when the car starts up, leaving the vehicle silent. People walking through a parking lot or crossing in front of you may not hear you coming. A dealer will update the sound system software at no charge.
The software running the computer that controls the big high-voltage battery can cut off electrical power. If that happens while you are driving, the vehicle can suddenly lose the power that turns the wheels — it simply stops pulling. Losing power without warning in traffic, on a highway, or partway through a turn leaves you very little time to react and steer over to the side of the road.
The large battery that drives your electric BMW may have damage inside it. That damage can cause an electrical short, and a short can start a fire. Because of that, BMW is telling owners not to drive these cars at all and not to charge them. Park the car outside, away from your house, garage or any other building, and leave it there until a dealer has put in a new battery at no cost.

BMW is recalling certain 2022-2023 iX and 2022 i4 electric vehicles. These cars have a Valet Parking Mode that limits what someone parking your car can do. While that mode is on, the big center screen may fail to show important safety information, such as warning messages and warning lights. That means a driver could miss an alert about a problem with the car. Dealers will update the screen's software for free, and letters went out September 6, 2022.
