BMW backup camera failures and missing EV pedestrian sound explained
Nearly every recall in this group is a rearview camera software fault. Four notices — covering 2018-2021 X3 and X4, X5, X7, 5 Series including M550i and M5, 7 Series, and 8 Series — describe the reverse image failing to appear, vanishing, or being partly obscured. The X3 shows up in all four, and 2020 model years are the most heavily represented; one 2020 X3 batch simply left the factory with no camera software installed at all. The fifth recall is different: 2022-2023 i4 eDrive40 and iX xDrive50 electric models whose artificial sound generator may fault at start-up, leaving the car silent to pedestrians. All five are federal safety-standard compliance issues fixed in software.
Warning signs to watch for
- Black or blank screen when you shift into reverse
- Rearview image fails to appear or drops out while backing up
- A small portion of the rear camera image is obscured
- No pedestrian warning sound at low speed on an i4 or iX after start-up
- On the camera recalls, nothing seems wrong until the moment you back up
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these five recalls tells owners to stop driving or to park outside. They are rated low to moderate, and the vehicles remain safe to use. Until the camera software is updated, back up slowly, turn and look over your shoulder, and use your mirrors rather than trusting the screen alone. On the 2022-2023 i4 and iX, the risk falls on people around the car rather than on you, so be extra watchful for pedestrians in parking lots and crosswalks.
What the free repair involves
Every remedy here is software. Dealers inspect the rearview camera software and reprogram it where needed; the 2020 X3 group that left assembly with no camera software simply has it installed. For the i4 and iX, dealers update the external artificial sound generator software. None of these are delivered over the air — a dealer visit is required — and all work is free of charge.

Common questions
Is my BMW X3 covered by more than one camera recall?
The X3 appears in four of the five notices, spanning 2018 through 2021. Different build periods fall under different campaigns, so check your VIN on NHTSA's lookup — your car may qualify for more than one free software update.
Can BMW fix the backup camera over the air?
No. These notices all describe dealer-performed software inspection and programming, not over-the-air updates. BMW mails owner letters, and the dealer reprograms the camera or sound generator during a visit at no cost to you.
Why is my i4 or iX silent at low speed?
The artificial sound generator control unit can fault during start-up and fail to produce the required external pedestrian warning sound. The vehicle drives normally; a dealer software update restores the sound and returns the car to federal compliance.
