Why do Audi lighting recalls involve software, not just bulbs?
Audi's lighting recalls here are less about bulbs and more about the electronics behind them. Two of the three are federal lighting-standard compliance problems fixed with control-module software: 2016-2018 Q3 models with LED headlights, whose body control module fails to tell the driver that a front turn signal is dead, and 2022-2024 Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron models built with the wrong headlight control module software, affecting the parking lights. The third is purely mechanical: 2020-2021 A5 and S5 Sportback and 2021 RS5 Sportback cars left the factory with the rear light wiring harness missing its anti-abrasion protection near the spare wheel well, which after a rear-end crash could leave the doors unopenable from outside.
Warning signs to watch for
- A front turn signal is out, but the dashboard indicator keeps blinking normally instead of warning you (2016-2018 Q3 with LED headlights).
- Parking lights that do not light the way they should, making the car harder for other drivers to see at night (Q4 e-tron).
- Doors that cannot be opened from outside after a rear impact — the outcome the A5/S5 Sportback wiring recall is meant to prevent.
- No warning at all for the chafed rear light wiring: the notice describes nothing an owner would notice before a rear-end crash.
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these three Audi lighting recalls carries a stop-driving or park-outside warning. The Q3 turn signal issue only matters once a signal bulb actually fails, so the car is fine to use in the meantime. The Q4 e-tron software problem can make you harder to see at night, so keep that in mind and book the update. The A5 and S5 Sportback wiring does not change how the car drives, but the consequence — doors that may not open from outside after a rear-end crash — is serious enough to schedule promptly.
What the free repair involves
All three are dealer visits and all are free. On the Q3, dealers reprogram the body control module. On the Q4 e-tron, they load a new data set into the headlight control module. On the A5, S5 and RS5 Sportback, they apply scuff protection to the rear light wiring harness. None of these is delivered over the air.

Common questions
My Q3's turn signals all work. Do I still need the recall done?
Yes. The recall does not fix a burned-out bulb; it fixes the warning system, so that when a front signal does fail the car actually alerts you. Dealers reprogram the body control module free of charge.
Is the Q4 e-tron headlight fix done over the air?
No. The notice says dealers install a new data set in the headlight control module, so it requires a service appointment. Owner notification letters were mailed June 6, 2024, and the work is free.
Why is a rear light wiring recall really about my doors?
The rear light harness runs near the spare wheel well without its anti-abrasion protection. If it chafes, a rear-end crash could leave the doors unable to be opened from outside — which is why Audi applies scuff protection.
