Why do GMC hoods, doors and grille trim come loose?
All three of these GMC recalls involve body parts that are supposed to stay attached and don't. The largest is the 2020 Sierra 2500 and 3500 HD hood recall, an expansion of an earlier campaign that swept in trucks which received defective hoods during later service work, such as collision repair — a hood that opens at speed blocks the windshield. The 2024 Terrain shares a door striker defect with its Chevrolet Blazer, Blazer EV and Equinox siblings: the strikers can fracture and let a door open while moving. The third is narrower, a 2022 Sierra 1500 chrome front grille deflector whose attachment points can crack and drop the trim onto the road. Heavy-duty Sierras and the newest Terrain carry the serious ones.
Warning signs to watch for
- A hood that no longer sits flush or latches securely, especially on an HD truck that has had collision or body work
- A door that does not latch properly, or that opens unexpectedly while the vehicle is moving
- Chrome grille trim at the front that feels loose or has cracked mounting points
- The notices describe no dashboard warning for any of these — the parts can let go without prior notice
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these three recalls carries a stop-driving or park-outside order, so you can keep driving while you wait for parts and an appointment. Urgency still differs. The 2020 Sierra HD hood and the 2024 Terrain door strikers are the two to schedule first, because a hood opening at highway speed or a door swinging open with someone in that seat can cause a crash immediately. The 2022 Sierra 1500 grille deflector is the low-priority one: the truck drives normally, and the concern is the trim becoming a hazard for traffic behind you.
What the free repair involves
Every repair here is free, and all three need a dealer visit — none is an over-the-air update. For the hood recall dealers replace the whole hood assembly, and GM contacts customers who bought hoods over the counter with replacement instructions. Terrain owners get all four door strikers and their attaching bolts replaced. On the Sierra 1500, dealers reinforce or repair every attachment point on the chrome grille deflector.

Common questions
My 2020 Sierra HD wasn't in the first hood recall — why am I getting a letter now?
The 2020 expansion covered trucks left out of the original campaign that later received defective hood parts during service, typically collision repair. Your VIN qualifies because of the part installed, not the original build, so the free hood replacement still applies.
Is the Terrain door striker problem shared with other GM models?
Yes. The same fracturing strikers were recalled on the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer, Blazer EV and Equinox alongside the GMC Terrain. Dealers replace all four strikers and their attaching bolts, and owner notification letters were mailed January 24, 2024.
Do I have to fix the chrome grille deflector if the piece hasn't moved?
Yes — have it done. GM rates the truck safe to drive, but cracked attachments can let the deflector detach and become a road hazard for other drivers. Dealers reinforce or repair the attachment points at no cost, so book it at a convenient time.
