GMC seat belt recalls: loose bolts, brackets and third-row belts
Nearly every GMC seat belt recall here comes down to fasteners and assembly. Buckle or anchor bolts left loose or wrong turn up on 2023 Canyon, 2023-2024 Hummer EV, 2024-2025 Sierra EV and the 2021 lineup built with incorrect bolts, while front-row center belt brackets were not secured to the seat frame on 2019-2021 Sierra 1500 and 2020-2021 Sierra 2500 and 3500. Full-size SUVs have their own pattern: 2021 Yukon and Yukon XL third-row belts entrapped or misrouted behind the folding seat mechanism, then 2021-2022 third-row buckle rivets that may not hold. Two outliers stand apart — 2017-2018 Sierra HD retractors built with the wrong torsion bar, and 2019-2020 Sierra 1500 pretensioners that vent hot gas which can ignite the carpet.
Warning signs to watch for
- Often nothing at all: most of these defects cannot be seen or felt and only matter in a crash
- A seat belt buckle or bracket that feels loose or moves at its anchor
- A third-row belt that looks pinched, damaged, or routed behind the folding seat mechanism
- A front-row center belt whose bracket does not appear secured to the seat frame
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these nine seat belt recalls tells owners to stop driving or to park outside. The defects show up in a crash, not during normal driving, so they are prompt repairs rather than emergencies. The sensible precautions are the ones the notices imply: keep the front-row center seat empty until the bracket recall is done, and avoid the third row on 2021-2022 Yukon and Yukon XL until the belts and buckles are checked. The 2024-2025 Sierra EV recall affects trucks still in dealer inventory, so no owner letters were mailed.
What the free repair involves
Most of these are fastener jobs: dealers tighten front and rear center seat belt buckle attachment bolts, replace incorrect bolts, and inspect and correctly reassemble the front-row center belt brackets. On the SUVs they inspect third-row belts and buckle assemblies, rerouting or replacing what is damaged. Others replace both front retractor assemblies, or close off the opening in the pretensioner bracket. All free of charge.

Common questions
Can my family still ride in the third row of my Yukon?
The notices do not forbid it, but 2021-2022 third-row belts may be misrouted behind the folding seat or have a buckle rivet that will not hold. Have the belts and buckles inspected before carrying passengers back there; inspection and replacement are free.
My seat belt looks and works fine — is my truck still affected?
Very likely yes. Loose or incorrect bolts sit under the seat and an incorrect retractor torsion bar is inside the mechanism, so nothing looks or feels wrong day to day. The problem only appears in a crash, so check your VIN.
How can a seat belt cause a fire?
On 2019-2020 Sierra 1500 and 2020 Sierra 2500 and 3500 with carpet flooring, a deploying front pretensioner can vent hot gas through an opening in the bracket and ignite the carpet. Dealers close off that opening, free of charge.
