GMC electrical recalls: stalling trucks, EV battery fire and phantom braking

4 NHTSA recalls · GMC · Electrical System · model years 2019–2024 (we track 2018 and newer) · newest 2026-07-30

GMC's electrical recalls are split between conventional trucks and electric ones. On 2019-2020 Sierra 1500, excess glue on the battery positive cable ring can create an intermittent connection at the alternator, which can stall the truck or spark a fire. On the EV side, 2022 Hummer EV Pickup is grouped with 2026 Sierra EV, Escalade IQ and Silverado EV for a high-voltage battery with an improperly secured internal module that can catch fire, while 2024 Hummer EV and Sierra EV rear drive units can have poorly insulated motor wires that touch and cut drive power. The 2023 Canyon is the outlier: its front camera module can see an obstacle that isn't there and trigger automatic emergency braking.

Warning signs to watch for

Is it safe to keep driving?

None of the four notices tells owners to stop driving or park outside — not even the 2026 high-voltage battery fire recall covering the 2022 Hummer EV Pickup, where GM says only to have the battery replaced as soon as a dealer can take the vehicle. The same applies to the 2019-2020 Sierra 1500 battery cable, which can stall the truck and spark, and to the 2024 Sierra EV and Hummer EV drive units. Treat any stall, unexpected braking or power loss as a reason to schedule immediately.

What the free repair involves

All four repairs are free. On the 2019-2020 Sierra 1500 dealers inspect the battery positive cable connection at the alternator for glue or contamination, then clean and reattach it. The 2023 Canyon gets updated front camera module software. The EVs get hardware: a replacement rear drive unit for 2024 Hummer EV and Sierra EV, and a complete high-voltage battery replacement for the 2022 Hummer EV Pickup.

Common questions

Do I need to park my Hummer EV outside because of the battery recall?

The notice does not tell owners to stop driving or to park outside. GM's remedy is a free high-voltage battery replacement because an internal module may be improperly secured, so book the vehicle in as soon as your dealer can take it.

Why does my 2023 GMC Canyon brake hard by itself?

The front camera module can falsely detect an obstacle, causing automatic emergency braking to engage unexpectedly. Unexpected hard braking can lead to a crash, so have the free front camera module software update done rather than living with it.

My Sierra 1500 stalls now and then — could that be this recall?

It may be. On 2019-2020 Sierra 1500, excess glue on the battery positive cable ring can cause an intermittent connection at the alternator, stalling the engine and risking a fire. Have the dealer inspect and clean that connection right away.
