What's wrong, in plain English

Certain Jeep Renegade vehicles with the Upland trim package have a computer that decides when the airbags should fire in a crash. On these vehicles that computer may have been programmed with the wrong settings. Because of that, during a head-on crash the airbags may not go off the way they should. Airbags that deploy incorrectly do not protect people the way they were designed to, so someone in the vehicle could be hurt more badly.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if recall 19V438000 (Chrysler number V73) applies to you.
2. Call a Jeep dealer, or Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403, to set an appointment.
3. Have the dealer replace the airbag control computer, which is free of charge.

Component: AIR BAGS: AIR BAG/RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE
Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2019 Jeep Renegade vehicles equipped with the Upland trim package. The Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) may have been incorrectly calibrated.
Safety risk: The miscalibrated ORC may incorrectly deploy the air bags during a frontal crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ORC. The recall began September 24, 2019. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is V73.
