The wrong reverse light assembly may have been installed in the rear bumper at the factory, so these vehicles do not meet the federal rules for lamps and reflectors. The result is that the backup lights may not light up the area behind the vehicle as well as they should. They also may not be noticeable enough to warn people walking behind you, or other drivers, that your Renegade is about to back up.
A small switch in the front seat belt buckle may not be plugged in correctly. That switch tells the vehicle whether someone is buckled in, and the airbag system uses that information to decide how to fire. Because of the bad connection, the front seat airbag may not go off the way it should in a crash. Nothing warns you that the connection is wrong. A dealer will repair the connection at no cost.
The software in your 8.4-inch or 12-inch radio screen has a bug. After you back up and shift out of reverse, the picture from the backup camera can stay on the screen instead of switching back to the normal display. That means you can be driving forward while a rear-facing picture is still showing, which can pull your eyes and attention off the road ahead. The fix is a software update for the radio screen.
Some 2020 Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X vehicles may have a cracked brake part at the right rear wheel. The caliper is the clamp that squeezes the brake pads against the wheel to slow the car down, and on these vehicles it may have been damaged when it was made. A cracked caliper can fail, and if it does, the vehicle takes longer to stop. Dealers will inspect the right rear caliper and replace it if there is a problem.
Certain Jeep Renegade vehicles with the Upland trim package have a computer that decides when the airbags should fire in a crash. On these vehicles that computer may have been programmed with the wrong settings. Because of that, during a head-on crash the airbags may not go off the way they should. Airbags that deploy incorrectly do not protect people the way they were designed to, so someone in the vehicle could be hurt more badly.
The computer that controls the airbags and other crash protection has the wrong software loaded. Because of that, it may switch off some of the safety features meant to protect people in a crash, so they may not work when they are needed. The same problem affects certain Fiat 500X models. Dealers will load the correct software into that control computer, and the work is free of charge.
A manufacturing mistake in the fuel pump can let fuel pressure drop when the engine is working hard — for example, climbing at high altitude or driving in very hot weather. If that happens the engine can stall, leaving you without power. This covers certain 2017-2018 Renegade 4X2 flex-fuel (E85) models with the 2.4-liter engine. Dealers replace the fuel pump free of charge. The recall began April 26, 2019.
The computer that runs the engine has a small part inside, a voltage regulator chip, that can fail. When it does, the engine can shut off while you are driving, or the vehicle may not start at all. A stall in traffic leaves you without engine power and can put you in the path of other vehicles. Dealers will replace the whole engine computer at no charge.
