Why do Jeep airbags keep getting recalled for not deploying?
These eleven Jeep airbag recalls fall into three repeating patterns. The largest is the Occupant Restraint Controller: bad software or calibration disabled passive safety features on 2019 Renegades in two separate recalls, shut off driver, passenger and knee airbags on the 2021 Grand Cherokee L and 2022 Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, and delayed side airbag deployment on 2022-2026 Grand Cherokees. The second is unsecured connectors — the right curtain airbag on 2021-2022 Cherokees, the front side airbags on 2021-2024 Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L, and a seat belt buckle switch sensor on 2019-2023 Renegades. The third is build and parts errors: loose inflator nuts inside 2018 Compass passenger modules, failing crash sensors on 2019 Cherokees, missing front bumper foam on 2024 Grand Cherokees, and a faulty steering column control module on 2023 models. Grand Cherokee recurs most, Renegade second.
Warning signs to watch for
- In most of these recalls there is no warning at all — the vehicle drives normally and the fault only shows up in a crash.
- The 2021 Grand Cherokee L and 2022 Wagoneer notice states that the airbags can be disabled without warning.
- Nothing you can see from the driver's seat: the 2018 Compass inflator nuts are loose inside the passenger airbag module.
- Build errors such as missing front bumper foam on 2024 Grand Cherokees leave no driver-detectable sign, so a VIN check is the only way to know.
Is it safe to keep driving?
Not one of these eleven recalls carries a stop-driving or park-outside instruction from NHTSA or Chrysler. Every notice says the vehicle drives normally; the risk appears only in a crash, when an airbag may deploy late, deploy poorly, or not deploy at all. Two are listed as already remedied on all affected vehicles — the right curtain connector on 2021-2022 Cherokees and the front side airbag connector on 2021-2024 Grand Cherokees. The 2018 Compass recall is worth acting on fastest, and the notice suggests considering who rides in the front seat until then.
What the free repair involves
Repairs differ by recall and all are free. Software recalls have the Occupant Restraint Controller reprogrammed, or on the 2019 Renegade Upland the ORC replaced outright. Connector recalls are a matter of securing or repairing the connection. Hardware recalls mean replacing the passenger airbag module, the impact and acceleration sensors, or the steering column control module after inspection, or installing the missing front bumper foam. None of these is over-the-air.

Common questions
Why does the Grand Cherokee appear in so many of these recalls?
Four separate recalls name Grand Cherokee or Grand Cherokee L: an ORC software fault, an unsecured front side airbag connector, missing bumper foam, and delayed side airbag deployment. They are different defects, so one dealer visit does not clear the others.
My recall says all vehicles have been remedied — do I still need to act?
Check your VIN anyway. Chrysler reports the 2021-2022 Cherokee curtain connector and the 2021-2024 Grand Cherokee side airbag connector recalls as complete on all affected vehicles, but if a lookup still shows the recall open on your VIN, book the dealer.
Will the airbag warning light tell me something is wrong?
The notices do not promise a warning light. The 2021 Grand Cherokee L and 2022 Wagoneer recall specifically says the airbags can be disabled without warning, so rely on a VIN recall lookup rather than on your dashboard.
