Mercedes-Benz Sprinter cargo tie-down rails may come loose

NHTSA campaign 19V908000 · Reported 2019-12-19 · Daimler Vans USA, LLC

medium How serious is it? About this label

Unsecured cargo shifting while you drive raises the risk of a crash, so the notice does not tell you to stop driving, but avoid hauling loads strapped to these rails until the repair is done.

What's wrong, in plain English

The metal rails along the inside walls of the cargo area — the ones you hook straps onto when tying down a load — may not have been attached correctly at the factory. Over time they can work loose and pull away from the wall. If that happens while you are driving, whatever you strapped to them is no longer held in place and can shift or spill around inside the van.

What you should do

1. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your van is covered.
2. Call a Mercedes-Benz or Freightliner Sprinter dealer and book the repair; Daimler Vans USA customer service is 1-877-762-8267, recall number VS3ZUSCHI.
3. Have the dealer reattach the lashing rails — the work is free, and the recall has been open since April 15, 2020.
