Serious — a fuel leak and fire are possible; the notice does not tell owners to park the car or stop driving, but get it repaired as soon as you can and stop driving immediately if you smell gas or see a puddle under the car.

What's wrong, in plain English

A manufacturing mistake left part of the bottom of the gas tank thinner than it should be. Rocks or other debris kicked up from the road could punch through that thin spot and let gasoline leak out, which could start a fire. The weakened tank may also not hold up the way it should in a crash. Dealers will replace the whole fuel tank, along with new seals, free of charge.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your 2022 Rogue is included in recall 22V259000 (Nissan's number is PC887).
2. Call your Nissan dealer or Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 and ask for the earliest fuel tank replacement appointment.
3. Have the fuel tank and seals replaced — there is no charge to you.

Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
Summary: Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2022 Rogue vehicles. Due to a manufacturing error, an area on the bottom wall of the fuel tank may be too thin.
Safety risk: Road debris may puncture the thin fuel tank wall, causing a gas leak and increasing the risk of a fire. In addition, the fuel tank may not perform as expected during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the fuel tank assembly and install a new lock ring, gasket, and o-ring seal, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 19, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PC887.
