What's wrong, in plain English

When the brake pads on these Taycans wear down, the car does put a warning on the instrument cluster, but it uses the wrong symbol in the wrong color. A driver can easily misread it and keep driving on worn-out pads, and worn pads mean the car does not stop as well as it should. Porsche dealers will update the instrument cluster software so the brake pad warning shows up correctly and is easy to understand.

Summary: Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (Porsche) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Taycan vehicles. An incorrect warning indicator with an incorrect color is displayed in the instrument cluster when notifying owners of worn brake pads. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems," and 101, "Control and Displays."
Safety risk: An incorrect warning indicator may be misinterpreted and result in driving on worn brake pads with reduced brake performance, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will update the software for the instrument cluster, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 14, 2023. Owners may contact Porsche's customer service at 1-800-767-7243. Porsche's number for this recall is APA5.
