Toyota Tundra engine may fail and stall

NHTSA campaign 24V381000 · Reported 2024-05-30 · Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing

critical How serious is it? About this label

This is among the more serious kinds of defect, because the engine can quit without warning while you drive; Toyota does not tell owners to park the truck, but get it to a dealer as soon as you can.

What's wrong, in plain English

Leftover debris from the factory may be inside the engine of these trucks and the Lexus LX600. That debris can damage the main bearings, the parts the crankshaft spins on, and if a bearing fails the engine can shut off while you are driving. You would lose engine power, possibly in traffic or at highway speed, which makes a crash more likely. Toyota dealers will replace the entire engine at no cost to you.

What you should do

1. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your truck is affected.
2. Call a Toyota or Lexus dealer, or Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331, and reference recall 24TB07/24TA07 or 24LB04/24LA04.
3. Schedule the free engine replacement, and ask about a loaner since the job is a large one.
