Toyota engine stalls and coolant leaks: which models are recalled?
Stalling is the thread running through all six. The V35A engine in the 2022-2024 Tundra accounts for three separate recalls on its own, all for manufacturing debris that can ruin the number one main bearing and cut drive power. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder shows up twice: porous engine castings that crack and leak coolant on the 2019-2020 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid and the 2020 Camry and Camry Hybrid, and oversized pistons on the 2018 Camry. The 2022 Prius and Prius Prime are the software case, where the ECU can falsely detect an error and shut the hybrid system down, taking drive power with it.
Warning signs to watch for
- The engine stalls or loses drive power with no advance warning
- Coolant loss or overheating in a 2019-2020 RAV4 or 2020 Camry
- Visible leaks or smoke from a damaged 2.5-liter engine
- The hybrid system shuts down while driving a 2022 Prius or Prius Prime
- Several notices describe failure that comes without warning, so a stall may be the first sign
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these six recalls tells owners to stop driving or park outside. The three Tundra V35A bearing recalls and the 2018 Camry piston recall allow continued driving, but because the engine can quit without warning, book the inspection as soon as you can. Same for the 2022 Prius and Prius Prime software recall. The engine casting recall on the RAV4 and Camry is the one with an added instruction: stop driving if you see overheating, leaks or smoke, since a damaged engine can leak oil and lead to a fire.
What the free repair involves
For the 2022-2023 Tundra, dealers replace the engine assembly. For the later 2022-2024 Tundra recalls they inspect the number one main bearing using inspection software and drive data, replacing the engine only if needed. The RAV4 and Camry get an engine inspection and, if necessary, replacement including the block; the 2018 Camry gets a piston date-code check; the Prius gets an ECU software update. All free.

Common questions
My Tundra is covered by more than one engine recall — why?
Toyota issued three recalls for V35A main bearing debris, in 2024, 2025 and 2026, and their year ranges overlap on 2022-2024 trucks. The later ones add a bearing inspection using drive data rather than replacing every engine. Your dealer confirms which applies to your VIN.
Will I get a whole new engine?
Only if the inspection calls for it. The 2022-2023 Tundra recall replaces the engine assembly outright, and the RAV4 and Camry casting recall replaces the engine including the block when cracks are found. The newer Tundra recalls replace the engine only when the bearing check fails.
Is the Prius hybrid shutdown a mechanical engine problem?
No. On the 2022 Prius and Prius Prime the Engine Control Unit software can falsely detect an error and shut the hybrid system down, causing a loss of drive power. The fix is an ECU software update at the dealer, not engine work.
