Ram equipment recalls: ProMaster cooling fans, extinguishers, cameras and labels
This is a small, mixed group, and the Ram ProMaster appears in three of the four notices. The most serious is a 2019 recall of 2015-2018 ProMasters with the 3.0L diesel or 3.6L gasoline engine and air conditioning, where the engine cooling fan can seize and the fan motor overheat — a fire risk. The other three are not defects in how the vehicle drives: Kidde plastic-handle and push-button 'Pindicator' fire extinguishers shipped in 2018 Ram 2500 through 5500 trucks may fail when needed; an upfitter's ASA Electronics Voyager monitor showed a reversed backup camera image on 2018 ProMaster-based vehicles; and 2018 ProMaster City tire placards list the wrong number of allowed occupants.
Warning signs to watch for
- Burning smell or an overheating warning in a ProMaster running the air conditioning
- Cooling fan noise, or a fan that stops turning when it should be running
- Backup camera image looks mirrored, so objects move the opposite way on screen
- A fire extinguisher that fails to discharge when you check it
- Tire placard occupant count that does not match the seats in the van
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these four recalls tells owners to stop driving or to park outside. The ProMaster cooling fan is the one to treat urgently because it is a fire risk — get the van in as soon as you can and do not ignore burning smells or overheating warnings. With the reversed backup camera, rely on your mirrors and a spotter when reversing until it is repaired. The ProMaster City with the wrong placard is safe as long as you do not overload it, and the recalled extinguisher simply should not be counted on.
What the free repair involves
Dealers replace the ProMaster engine cooling fan module and install a corrected tire placard on the ProMaster City, free of charge. The other two are handled outside the Ram dealer: Chrysler's letter directs owners to contact Kidde for a free replacement fire extinguisher, and Unicell is working with ASA Electronics to provide a free remedy for the backup camera monitor.

Common questions
Who actually replaces my recalled fire extinguisher?
Kidde, not the dealer. Chrysler notified owners of 2018 Ram 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 trucks instructing them to contact Kidde for a free replacement extinguisher. Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 can help if you cannot reach Kidde.
My ProMaster is a 2018 — do I have one cooling recall or two?
Possibly two. The 2019 equipment recall covers 2015-2018 ProMasters with diesel or gasoline engines and A/C for a seizing fan; a separate 2025 engine cooling recall covers 2018-2026 ProMasters for an overheating fan circuit. Check your VIN against both.
Is a wrong seating-capacity sticker worth a dealer visit?
Yes — it is a noncompliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 110, and the corrected placard is free. Until it is installed, do not rely on the sticker for occupant or load limits, because the number printed on it is incorrect.
