Volkswagen sunroof fire and Atlas water leak recalls owners should check

3 NHTSA recalls · Volkswagen · Visibility · model years 2018–2022 (we track 2018 and newer) · newest 2022-07-27

Volkswagen's visibility recalls in this group cluster around the roof and around water getting where it should not. Two involve the panoramic sunroof: the 2018 Tiguan's sunroof ambient light bar LED module can short circuit and start a fire, and the 2022 Golf R A8 and Golf GTI have a roof touch switch sensitive enough to be pressed by accident, a compliance failure under federal safety standards. The third is the Atlas family again — 2021 Atlas and 2020-2021 Atlas Cross Sport — where a blocked air conditioning drain tube lets water leak inside near the airbag control module, so the airbag can deploy on its own. Model years run 2018 through 2022.

Warning signs to watch for

Is it safe to keep driving?

No recall in this group carries a stop-driving or park-outside instruction, but the severity varies. On the 2018 Tiguan a short circuit can lead to a fire, so have the LED power disconnected as soon as possible rather than putting it off. On the 2021 Atlas and 2020-2021 Atlas Cross Sport an airbag can deploy with no warning while you are driving, which can injure you or cause a crash, so get it inspected quickly. The 2022 Golf R and GTI is otherwise fine to drive; keep children clear of the sunroof.

What the free repair involves

Three different repairs. On the 2018 Tiguan, dealers disconnect the power supply to the panoramic sunroof LED module until a future service action can safely reactivate the feature. On the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport, dealers repair the drain tube and replace the airbag control module as necessary. On the 2022 Golf R and GTI, dealers replace the roof module switch. All free of charge, and none is over-the-air.

Common questions

Will my Tiguan's sunroof light bar work again?

Not right away. Dealers disconnect the power supply to the panoramic sunroof LED module free of charge, and Volkswagen says the feature will be reactivated by a future service action once that can be done safely.

My Atlas carpet is wet — is that this recall?

It may be. The recall describes a blocked air conditioning drain tube letting water leak inside near the airbag control module. Dealers repair the drain tube and replace the module as necessary, free. Have it inspected as soon as you can.

How serious is the Golf R sunroof switch recall?

It is the mildest of the three. The touch switch is sensitive enough to be pressed inadvertently, which fails a federal safety standard; the main danger is a body part caught by a roof closing unexpectedly, especially with children in the car.
