A wiring connection for your transmission may not have been put together correctly, either when the car was built or during an earlier recall repair. Water can get into the connector and cause corrosion, which can lead to an electrical short. A short in that area can start a fire. Mercedes has already mailed a warning letter, but the full fix is not ready yet. Cars that had the earlier recall done still need this new repair.

These Mercedes-Benz models, including the AMG CLS53 and AMG E53, use a 48-volt electrical system. The ground cable for that system, in the engine bay, may not have been tightened down properly at the factory. A loose connection there can get very hot, and an overheating cable can start a fire under the hood. Dealers will inspect the connection and tighten or repair it free of charge, so do not put this one off.

The 12-volt battery in the trunk may not be bolted down tightly. In a crash it could move and break its electrical connections. If that happens, several things that help you afterward may stop working: the automatic emergency call that dials for help, the hazard flashers, the power seat controls, and the doors that unlock by themselves. The car drives normally otherwise. A dealer will secure the battery properly.

On these Mercedes-AMG cars, the bundle of wires running to the transmission may have been routed along the wrong path. Sitting where it was not meant to sit, the electrical plug can corrode over time, and corroded wiring can short out. An electrical short can start a fire. A dealer will inspect the connector and repair it if needed, move the wiring back to the correct position, and add a bracket to hold it there, all at no cost.

These Mercedes vehicles have a built-in emergency call system that connects the people inside to an emergency call center. A software fault on the SIM card in the car's communication unit can stop the car from connecting to the mobile network, and that shuts the emergency call feature down. You would not know until you needed it, and help could be delayed. The car otherwise drives normally. The fix is a software update, sent to the car over the air or done by a dealer.

These Mercedes-Benz models have a heated leather steering wheel with sensors that tell the car whether your hands are on the wheel. A software mistake in that sensor's control unit can stop it from noticing when you let go. If that happens while you are using the Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC cruise system, the car may not warn you to take the wheel, and its automatic emergency stop feature may not call for help. Dealers reprogram the software free.

These Mercedes models have sensors in the sides of the car that tell the airbags and seatbelts when a side impact is happening. The plugs connecting those sensors can work loose. If that happens, the side airbags and the seatbelts may react late in a side crash, or not work as designed, so people inside can be hurt worse than they should be. The dealer checks the side crash sensors and replaces any that need it, free of charge.

Rear seat belts have a mode that locks the belt tight so a child seat cannot move around. On these vehicles that lock can switch off too early. When it does, the child seat is not held firmly and can shift in a crash, leaving a child less protected. Mercedes dealers will inspect the rear seat belt assemblies and replace them if needed. Owners were sent a first letter in August 2021 and a final letter in September 2021.

Certain Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG models have a software problem in the MBUX multimedia system. The center display can stay black or restart itself after you start the car. When that happens, the backup camera picture may not appear correctly when you shift into reverse, so you cannot see what is behind you on the screen. Because of this, the vehicles do not meet the federal rear visibility rule. A software update fixes it at no charge.

A small electrical switch that tells the car where the front seat is sitting may have a bad connection inside. If that connection fails, the driver and passenger airbags, and the seat belt parts that soften the belt's pull on your chest, may not work the way they should in a crash. The car drives normally, so you would have no way to notice the fault until a crash happens. Dealers replace the seat position switches at no charge.
