What do the Mercedes-Benz seat belt recalls mean for child seats?
Half of this group is really about child seats. On 2021 G550, AMG G63, E350, E450, AMG CLS53, AMG E53, AMG GT43/53/63, 2021-2022 CLS450 and AMG E63 models, the rear automatic locking retractors deactivate early and may not hold a child restraint. On 2025-2026 GLE 350 4MATIC vehicles, the center rear belt was built without the child seat protection function at all. The other two are front-seat hardware: front buckles on 2018-2019 E-Class, CLS, GLC and AMG variants can report a belt as unfastened when it is latched, and on 2022-2025 C 300 and 2023-2024 AMG C 43 vehicles a misinstalled tensioner cover lets the driver's belt anchor loosen.
Warning signs to watch for
- The seat belt reminder light or chime stays on even though the belt is latched
- A rear belt will not switch into its locking mode when pulled all the way out
- A child seat feels loose or shifts after you install it with the belt
- The driver's belt cover or anchor looks out of place or feels loose
- Some of these defects give no visible sign at all until a crash
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these four recalls tells owners to stop driving or park outside. The buckle recall affects the sensing, not the belt itself, so the belt still restrains you. The C 300 and AMG C 43 anchor issue should be inspected soon because a loose anchor means less protection in a crash. For the 2021 rear retractor recall and the GLE 350 center rear belt, avoid installing a child seat in the affected position until the repair is done, and use another properly locking position instead.
What the free repair involves
Every repair is free of charge and done at the dealer. Dealers inspect the front seat belt buckles and replace them as needed, inspect and repair the driver-side seat belt covers on C 300 and AMG C 43 models, inspect and replace the 2021 rear seat belt assemblies as necessary, and replace the center rear seat belt assembly on GLE 350 4MATIC vehicles.

Common questions
Can I still put a child seat in my Mercedes while I wait for the repair?
Not in the affected position. The 2021 rear retractors and the GLE 350 center rear belt may not lock a child restraint properly. Use another seating position whose belt locks correctly until the dealer completes the free repair.
My belt reminder keeps saying the belt is unfastened. Is that the recall?
It may be. The buckle recall covers front buckles that can read as unfastened even when latched. The belt itself still works, but dealers need to inspect the buckles and replace them if necessary, free of charge.
My C 300 belt looks fine. Do I still need the inspection?
Yes. The cover may not be correctly installed on the tensioner, which can let the anchor come loose, and that is not always visible. Dealers inspect and repair it free; letters were mailed May 16, 2025.
