Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain rear seat welds may fail

NHTSA campaign 19V184000 · Reported 2019-03-07 · General Motors LLC

medium How serious is it? About this label

In the event of a crash, the insufficient welds may result in an increased risk of injury for an occupant seated in the rear-right position. The notice does not tell owners to stop driving.

What's wrong, in plain English

The right-hand rear seat may not have enough welds on the bracket that holds the head restraint — the padded headrest at the top of the seatback. If the vehicle is in a crash, that bracket may not hold as well as it should, so a passenger sitting in that spot is more likely to be hurt. Other seating positions are not affected. Your dealer will replace the whole right rear seatback frame at no charge.

What you should do

1. Look up your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm your vehicle is affected.
2. Contact your dealer, or Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC at 1-800-462-8782, and give them recall number N192209550.
3. Schedule the seatback frame replacement — it costs you nothing.
