Chevrolet seat recalls: loose seat bolts and bad welds explained
Chevrolet's seat recalls come down to two build errors. First, attachment bolts that were never installed, not reinstalled after an assembly-line repair, or left stripped and loose: the 2020 Buick Encore GX and 2021 Trailblazer front seats, the 2021 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Yukon XL front seats, and the driver's seat height-adjust pivot on 2022-2023 Equinox and 2022 Terrain. The rest are weld defects, and they spread across the lineup — the 2018 Sonic driver's seat-back frame, the rear-right head-restraint bracket on 2019 Equinox and Terrain, the driver's cushion frame power tilt mechanism on 2021 Malibu and 2022 Equinox, Blazer and XT4, and a manual passenger seat hook on 2022 Colorado. Every one matters mainly in a crash.

- A seat that feels loose, rocks or shifts more than it should
- Play or looseness in the driver's power tilt or height adjustment
- A rear-right head restraint that does not feel solid
- A front passenger seat that seems to move against its track
- Missing or untightened bolts often produce no symptom — the seat behaves normally day to day
Is it safe to keep driving?
No recall in this group tells owners to stop driving or to park outside, and the notices describe vehicles that drive normally. The danger shows up in a crash, when a seat may not hold its occupant properly. The practical caution is about where people sit: consider leaving the rear-right seat empty on a 2019 Equinox or Terrain and the front passenger seat empty on a 2022 Colorado until they are inspected. Any seat that feels loose should be looked at quickly rather than left until the next service visit.
What the free repair involves
Dealers inspect first in most of these. Front seat attachments are checked and missing or loose bolts installed as needed. Where welds are at fault the part comes out: the Sonic driver's seat-back, the rear-right seatback frame on Equinox and Terrain, and driver or passenger seat cushion frames on the newer models, replaced if the inspection calls for it. Common questions
How would I know my front seat is missing its bolts?
Often you would not. The notices describe seats that behave normally in daily driving, which is why the remedy is an inspection: dealers check the attachments on both front seats and install the attachment bolts as needed, free of charge.
Can I still put a child seat in the rear-right seat of my 2019 Equinox?
That seat has insufficient welds on the head-restraint bracket, leaving a passenger there less protected in a crash. The notice suggests seating passengers elsewhere until the dealer replaces the rear-right seatback frame, which is done free of charge.
Will the dealer definitely replace my seat?
Not always. Several remedies are inspect-and-replace-if-necessary — the driver's cushion frame on Malibu, Equinox, Blazer and XT4, the Colorado passenger seat, and the Equinox and Terrain driver's seat. The Sonic seat-back and Equinox rear-right frame are replaced outright.
