16 recalls covering model years 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024. To check whether your vehicle is affected, look up your 17-character VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls — a recall may apply only to some vehicles of a given year.
On certain 2024 Chevrolet Blazer, Blazer EV, Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles, the door strikers can crack and break. A striker is the metal loop on the door frame that the door latch grabs to hold the door shut. If one breaks, that door can swing open on its own — including while you are driving down the road. Dealers will replace all four door strikers and their bolts for free.
The metal bars in the back seat that a child seat clips onto got too much paint coating at the factory. The extra thickness can stop the clips from latching on, so the child seat may not attach the way it should. Until the car is fixed, GM says to install child seats using the vehicle's rear seat belts instead of the anchor bars. A dealer will inspect the bars and remove and replace the finish where needed, at no cost.
The fuel pump unit may not send enough gasoline to the engine at all times. When that happens the engine can stall, meaning it shuts off while you are driving. A stall can happen with no warning, including in traffic, and you lose engine power. The dealer replaces the fuel pump unit at no charge. This recall covers certain Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain models built for those years.
These Equinox and Terrain models have ventilated front passenger seats with a system that senses who is sitting there. It is supposed to shut off the front passenger airbag when a small child or a child car seat is in that spot. On these vehicles it may not shut the airbag off. An airbag that goes off in a crash with a child or infant in the front seat can hurt them badly. Dealers will replace the sensing system for free.
A bolt in the driver's seat frame, at the pivot point where the seat height adjusts, may be stripped or loose. With that bolt missing or not holding, the seat may not hold the driver in place properly during a crash. You might also notice the seat feels wobbly or shifts when you move. Dealers will inspect the driver's seat and replace the seat cushion frame if it is damaged, at no cost.
Certain Chevrolet Malibu, Equinox and Blazer models and the Cadillac XT4 may have a bad weld in the driver's seat cushion frame, in the part that tilts the seat up and down. Because the weld is not done properly, the frame may not hold the driver firmly in place during a crash. Dealers will inspect the driver's seat and replace the cushion frame if it needs it, at no charge to you. Notification letters were mailed to owners on June 23, 2022.
Some of these SUVs left the factory on Hankook tires that were not made correctly. The tires did not get enough of the chemical that hardens the rubber properly. Because of that, the tread — the grooved part that grips the road — can peel away from the rest of the tire while you are driving. A dealer will read the date and identification code stamped on each tire and swap out any that are affected.
Seat belts are bolted to the vehicle body and to the seats. On these vehicles, the wrong bolts may have been used at one or more of those spots, so a belt may not be attached securely. If a belt pulls loose in a crash, it may not hold the person wearing it, which can mean more serious injuries. Dealers will find and replace any wrong bolts at no charge.
Inside the automatic transmission on these Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC vehicles is a part tied to the automatic stop/start system. The end cap on that part may be missing bolts. If bolts are missing, transmission fluid can leak out. A bad leak can leave the vehicle unable to move under its own power, which is dangerous if it happens in traffic. Leaking transmission fluid can also catch fire if it lands on something hot. A dealer will inspect the part and replace it if bolts are missing.
Some 2020 Chevrolet Equinox SUVs left the factory with the wrong grease in the rear brake calipers — the parts that squeeze the brake pads against the wheels. The wrong grease can make the rubber seals swell up, which keeps the brakes from fully releasing. The brakes then rub constantly and get very hot. Overheated brake pads do not stop the car as well as they should. Dealers will fit new rear calipers along with new brake fluid, a hose gasket, and wheel lubricant.
Certain 2019-2020 Chevrolet Equinox all-wheel-drive vehicles have a fuel tank with a seam that may not have been sealed properly when it was built. Gasoline can seep out along that seam, near the spot where fuel enters the tank. Leaking gas near anything hot or anything that can spark may catch fire. There is no patch for this one — GM dealers will take out the tank and install a brand-new fuel tank at no cost to you.
The right-hand rear seat may not have enough welds on the bracket that holds the head restraint — the padded headrest at the top of the seatback. If the vehicle is in a crash, that bracket may not hold as well as it should, so a passenger sitting in that spot is more likely to be hurt. Other seating positions are not affected. Your dealer will replace the whole right rear seatback frame at no charge.
The pistons inside the rear brake calipers, the parts that squeeze the brake pads against the wheels, were not coated properly. That can let gas pockets form in the brake system at the rear wheels. Gas squashes when you press the pedal instead of pushing firmly on the pads, so the rear brakes do less of the work and the vehicle can take longer to stop than you expect. The dealer bleeds the brake system to clear the gas out.
The high pressure fuel pump on these vehicles can come loose from the bracket that holds it in place. Once loose, the pump can damage the high pressure fuel line next to it. A damaged line can leak gasoline into the engine compartment, where hot parts can set it on fire. A dealer will replace both the fuel pump and the fuel pipe at no charge to you.
The driver's and front passenger's door windows on some 2018 Chevrolet Equinox vehicles may not have been heat-treated correctly at the factory. Car side windows are built to shatter into small, dull pieces if they break. Glass that was not treated properly can break into large, sharp chunks instead. That raises the chance of serious cuts if a window breaks in a crash, or if you or a rescuer has to break one to get out of the car.
The right front driveshaft, the bar that sends engine power to the right front wheel, can crack and break apart while you are driving. If it does, the vehicle stops pulling itself forward and coasts to a stop, which is dangerous in traffic. If it breaks while the vehicle is parked on a hill without the parking brake set, the vehicle can roll away on its own. Dealers replace the right front driveshaft assembly at no cost.
