BMW integrated brake recalls: losing brake assist and stability control
All three of these recalls describe the same defect, expanded over eight months of 2024: the integrated brake (IB) system can malfunction and cause a loss of power brake assist, or disable the antilock brakes and stability control. Coverage grows with each filing, but the same vehicles keep reappearing — the 2023-2025 X1, X5, X6, X7 and XM, the 530i, 540i, i5, 740i, 760i, i7 and 750e, plus the Rolls-Royce Spectre and 2025 MINI Countryman and Hardtop models. The 2023-2024 X1 and X7 are named in every one. February was rated high and September critical; the October filing went out as an interim warning before a remedy was ready.
Warning signs to watch for
- Brake pedal suddenly requires much more effort to press
- Stopping distances noticeably longer than normal
- Antilock brake or stability control warning indication if the system deactivates
- Car feels harder to control in a swerve or on slippery pavement
- The notices warn the malfunction can occur with little warning
Is it safe to keep driving?
No notice here orders owners to stop driving or to park the vehicle outside. Even so, this is the most safety-critical group filed for these models: losing power assist lengthens stopping distances, and losing stability control can cost you control of the car, sometimes with little warning. Treat it as urgent rather than routine — book the dealer appointment now, leave extra following distance, avoid hard stops and high speeds, and do not defer the repair while waiting for a more convenient date.
What the free repair involves
There is no software patch here. In all three campaigns dealers replace the integrated brake system or the integrated brake module outright, free of charge. Owner letters for the February and September recalls were mailed during 2024; the October recall began with interim letters explaining the safety risk, with a second letter to follow once the remedy is available.

Common questions
Why did BMW file three recalls for the same brake system?
Each filing covers a different population of affected integrated brake systems. The defect and the replacement remedy are the same; the models and model years covered differ, so a VIN check matters more than which recall date you remember.
Do the brakes stop working completely?
The notices describe a loss of power brake assist and possible loss of antilock braking and stability control, not a described total brake failure. Pedal effort rises sharply and stopping distances grow, so the car becomes much harder to stop quickly.
My MINI or Rolls-Royce is listed — is it the same fix?
Yes. The February and September recalls cover MINI Countryman and Hardtop models and the Rolls-Royce Spectre alongside BMW vehicles, with the same integrated brake system replacement. Rolls-Royce owners are pointed to a separate Rolls-Royce customer service line.
