Why do Honda airbags deploy without a crash or fail?
Unintended deployment is the thread running through Honda's airbag recalls here. Two of the four cover the same failing part: seat weight sensors that crack and can make the front passenger airbag deploy when it should not. The 2024 campaign covered 2020-2022 Accord, CR-V, Civic, Pilot, Odyssey and Acura MDX, RDX and TLX; the 2026 one widened the same sensor problem back to 2017 and forward to 2026 models, so many Honda and Acura owners may see a second letter. A software error in the SRS control unit can fire the side and curtain airbags in 2018-2022 Odysseys with no crash at all, and burrs inside the 2019 CR-V steering wheel core can chafe the harness, disabling the driver's airbag or setting it off without warning.
Warning signs to watch for
- An airbag firing with no crash — the 2019 CR-V and 2018-2022 Odyssey notices describe exactly that
- A driver's airbag that has been silently disabled by damaged steering wheel wiring, which you would only discover in a crash
- No warning light or driving symptom is described for the cracked seat weight sensors — only a dealer can identify them
- Nothing in these notices ties the defects to how the vehicle drives; engine, steering and brakes are unaffected
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these four recalls carries a stop-driving or park-outside instruction, and none affects how the vehicle steers, brakes or accelerates. Honda does treat them as urgent. The 2019 CR-V is the sharpest case, since the damaged harness can either disable the driver's airbag or set it off while you drive; the 2018-2022 Odyssey software fault can fire the side and curtain airbags with no crash. The seat weight sensor recalls are lower priority day to day, because the risk shows up in a crash — but the front passenger seat is the one affected.
What the free repair involves
All four repairs are free and all require a dealer visit; none is over-the-air. For the seat weight sensor recalls, dealers replace the sensors — the 2024 one is phased, so parts may be scheduled by model. Odyssey owners get the SRS control unit reprogrammed, or the unit replaced if needed. On the 2019 CR-V, dealers fit a protective cover over the steering wheel core and replace the clockspring and harnesses.

Common questions
I already had a seat weight sensor replaced — why another letter?
Honda issued the seat weight sensor recall twice, in 2024 and again in 2026, covering different models and build years. If your VIN falls in the newer campaign, the sensors are replaced again free of charge; a dealer can confirm by VIN.
Can someone ride in the front passenger seat while I wait for the repair?
The notices place no restriction on seating. The defect means the passenger airbag may deploy when it should have stayed off, which could injure a front-seat passenger in a crash. Nothing in the recall tells owners to leave that seat empty.
Why is the 2019 CR-V recall rated more serious than the others?
Because the burred steering wheel core can damage the harness two ways: leaving the driver's airbag unable to deploy in a crash, or letting it deploy on its own while you are driving. Honda replaces the clockspring and harnesses free.
