A driveshaft is the spinning bar that carries power from the engine out to a front wheel. On these vehicles, part of that shaft can crack and break. If it breaks while you are driving, the vehicle can lose power to the wheels. If it breaks while the vehicle is parked and the parking brake is not set, the vehicle can roll away on its own. The dealer inspects both front driveshafts and replaces either one if needed, free of charge.

On certain 2023 Subaru Outback, Legacy, Ascent and Impreza vehicles, the bolts holding the middle support of the driveshaft can work loose. The driveshaft is the spinning shaft under the car that sends engine power toward the wheels. If those bolts loosen, the front end of the shaft can come apart from the car while you are driving. A driveshaft that separates underneath a moving vehicle increases the risk of a crash.

On certain 2024 Subaru Crosstrek and Impreza vehicles, there is not enough space behind the dashboard. A bundle of wires can rub against a metal bracket that supports the steering column. Over time the rubbing wears through the wire covering and causes a short circuit. That short can make the vehicle lose drive power. A dealer inspects the wiring, adds a clamp to hold it away from the bracket, and tapes or replaces damaged wiring.

On some 2023 Imprezas, the small switch that tells the car when you press the brake pedal was not set correctly at the factory. Two things can go wrong. Your brake lights may glow even when your foot is nowhere near the brake, so drivers behind you get a false signal. And you may be able to start the car and move the shifter out of Park without pressing the brake at all, so the car can roll away.

The wrong clear paint coating was used on part of the body where the windshield is glued in. Because of that, the glue may not hold the windshield firmly to the car. In a crash, the windshield could come loose and fall away, which can hurt the people inside. This one cannot be fixed with a normal repair — Subaru is offering to trade your car for another one or buy it back.

The reflectors built into the front headlight units — the side reflectors on both sides, plus the reflector that shapes the low beam on the left side — may not reflect light as well as they should. That makes it harder for you to see the road ahead and harder for other drivers to notice your car. Because of this, the car does not meet federal lighting rules. Dealers replace the front headlamp assemblies free of charge.

A weld on the left-front lower control arm — the metal arm that holds the front wheel in place — can fail. If it does, the arm separates from the frame and the tire can jam against the wheel well. That can make you lose control of the car while you are driving. Subaru says not to drive the vehicle at all until a dealer has inspected it and replaced the arm if needed.

The low-pressure fuel pump sits inside the gas tank and pushes fuel toward the engine. In these vehicles that pump can fail. If it quits, the engine can stall and shut off while you are driving, and you would lose engine power with little warning. A stall in traffic, at highway speed, or in an intersection can easily lead to a crash. The dealer replaces the pump inside the tank with a new one.

On these cars, the engine computer may keep sending power to an ignition coil even after you shut the engine off. That can cause an electrical short in the coils, and a short can make the engine stall. An engine that quits while you are driving — especially in traffic or at speed — makes a crash more likely. Your dealer will update the engine computer software, replace the ignition coils, and replace the front exhaust pipe if it is needed, all free.

The cable that connects your gear shifter to the transmission is held on by a nut, and on these 2021 Subaru Outback and Impreza cars that nut may not have been tightened enough at the factory. Over time it can work loose. If the cable comes free, the shifter may stop doing what you ask — you could pick a gear and the car not actually go into it. A dealer checks the nut and tightens it if needed.

The pump that sends gasoline from the tank to the engine can stop working. If it quits, the engine shuts off while you are driving and the car will not start again. That can leave you stopped in traffic or on the side of a highway with no warning and no way to move. Subaru dealers will replace the low pressure fuel pump at no charge to you.

On certain Impreza and Crosstrek cars, the engine computer can keep sending power to the ignition coil even after you shut the engine off. That extra power can cause a short circuit and blow a fuse. If the short happens while you are driving, the engine can shut off unexpectedly. Subaru dealers will update the engine computer software and check the ignition coil, replacing it if it is damaged. Some cars with a damaged coil and a specific stored fault code also get a new front exhaust pipe.

A small aluminum valve that lets pressure escape from the engine can come apart. The broken pieces can then be pulled into the engine, and the engine can lose power while you are driving. A dealer will look at the valve and replace it if needed. If the valve has already broken and the missing pieces cannot be located, Subaru will replace the entire engine. Everything, including an engine replacement, is free. Repairs have been available since December 2019.
