Buying a used 2023 Ford Escape? Check these 11 recalls first

11 NHTSA recalls · 95 owner complaints on file

Seven critical recalls still center on fuel injector and oil leaks, hybrid engine fire and hybrid battery short-circuit risk, but the list broadens into electronics: a misaimed radar that can make cruise control brake unexpectedly, an instrument display that can go dark, and rearview cameras that freeze or blank. Complaints fall to 95 unverified reports, led by electrical system (38) and engine (28), with three alleged fires.

Before you buy

  1. Get the 17-character VIN from the seller and run it at nhtsa.gov/recalls. It shows which recalls are still unrepaired on that exact car.
  2. Test adaptive cruise control on a test drive and ask whether it has ever braked for no reason.
  3. Check that the instrument cluster lights fully on startup and the backup camera image appears every time.
  4. Verify the fuel injector, oil leak and block heater recalls are closed for this VIN.
  5. Open recalls are repaired free at any Ford dealer, whoever owns the car — an open recall is a to-do item, not a bill.
