Buying a used 2019 Jeep Cherokee? Check these 11 recalls first

11 NHTSA recalls · 1,633 owner complaints on file

The heaviest year here on both counts: ten recalls, led by a steering gear that may break and cause loss of steering, plus two stalling recalls, a transmission that can stop working, weakened rear brake calipers, crash sensors that may affect airbags, failing gauges and chimes, and two separate power transfer unit rollaway recalls. NHTSA logged 1,633 unverified owner complaints with 40 crashes, 19 fires and 37 injuries, mostly power train and engine.

Before you buy

  1. Get the 17-character VIN from the seller and run it at nhtsa.gov/recalls. It shows which recalls are still unrepaired on that exact car.
  2. Confirm all ten remedies by VIN, including both power transfer unit recalls, which are separate campaigns.
  3. Drive it long enough to check for stalling, harsh or missing shifts, and unusual steering play or noise.
  4. Verify the airbag light, gauges and warning chimes all work, and request transmission service records.
  5. Open recalls are repaired free at any Jeep dealer, whoever owns the car — an open recall is a to-do item, not a bill.
