Inside the engine of these Volvo trucks, a gear called the idler gear is held in place by bolts on a bracket. Those bolts may not have been tightened properly. If they loosen, the gear can come away from the engine and tear up parts inside it. The engine can then stall, leaving you without power in traffic. Dealers will inspect the truck and replace the turbo compound unit if needed, at no cost to you.
These trucks have a control unit that runs several driver-assist and braking systems. Electrical interference and a weak signal can make that unit misread commands or quit working. When it does, anti-lock brakes, traction control, stability control, adaptive cruise control, and the collision warning system can work poorly or stop working at all. Certain 2024 Volvo VN and VHD trucks with size 295/75 or 385/65 Continental tires on the front axle have a sticker that lists the wrong maximum weight the front axle can carry. Because the number on the certification label is too high, the truck can be loaded past what it should safely handle. Nothing mechanical is broken — the information is simply wrong. A dealer will peel off the incorrect label and put on a correct one, free of charge.
On some 2023-2024 Volvo VN trucks, the sensor that tells the engine where the gas pedal is can come unplugged. If that happens, the engine is supposed to drop back to idle within two seconds, but it may not. The engine could keep pulling while you are trying to slow down, which makes the truck hard to control. This breaks the federal rule for accelerator controls. Volvo will put in a new throttle pedal and update the software.
The bench seat on the passenger side may not be properly attached to the floor. The welded nut holding it down was not made strong enough, and that same area anchors the seat belt. In a crash the attachment points can fail, letting the whole bench seat and the person in it shift out of place. Dealers will fix it by taking out the weld nut and putting in two nuts and a washer instead.
The bolts that hold the steering gear in place may not have been tightened properly at the factory. The steering gear is the part that turns your steering wheel motion into the wheels actually turning. If those bolts are loose, you can lose control of the truck while driving. The dealer will tighten the steering gear bolts to the correct specification. The check and the repair cost you nothing. Volvo is mailing letters to owners of the affected trucks.
