Hyundai Nexo hydrogen fuel leaks: what owners need to know

All three recalls in this group are for the Hyundai Nexo, and all three involve hydrogen escaping from the fuel system. The 2019 model year is caught in every one. The earliest covers 2019 Nexo vehicles whose inlet receptacle filter can detach after refueling and leak hydrogen at the fill port. The second covers 2019-2021 Nexo models whose hydrogen gas detection sensors may fail to detect a leak in the delivery system, so a leak could go unnoticed. The third and broadest covers 2019-2024 Nexo vehicles with a thermally activated pressure relief device that can break and leak gas, causing a fire while the vehicle sits parked. All three are rated critical.
Warning signs to watch for
- Gas escaping at or around the fill port after hydrogen refueling
- A hydrogen leak warning from the vehicle's detection system
- On 2019-2021 Nexo, that warning may never come — the sensors themselves may fail to detect a leak
- The pressure relief device can break and leak while the car is parked, with no driving symptom described in the notice
Is it safe to keep driving?
None of these three recalls tells Nexo owners to stop driving. All three, however, instruct you to park the vehicle outside and away from structures until the repair is finished, because a hydrogen leak can lead to a fire while the car is parked. That advice applies to every Nexo from 2019 through 2024 under the pressure relief device recall, and to 2019-2021 cars under the sensor recall. Treat all three as urgent and keep the vehicle away from your garage and home.
What the free repair involves
Each recall replaces the failed part. Dealers replace the hydrogen fuel inlet receptacle on the fill-port recall, replace the hydrogen gas detection sensors on the 2019-2021 recall, and replace the thermally activated pressure relief device on the 2019-2024 recall, for which Hyundai first mailed interim letters warning owners of the risk. There is no software fix here, and all work is free of charge.

Common questions
Can I still park my Nexo in my garage?
No. All three Nexo recalls advise parking outside and away from structures until the repair is complete, because a hydrogen leak can cause a fire while the vehicle is parked. Keep it away from your garage, carport and home.
Will my Nexo warn me if hydrogen is leaking?
Not necessarily. One recall covers 2019-2021 Nexo vehicles whose hydrogen gas detection sensors may fail to detect leaks in the hydrogen delivery system. Until those sensors are replaced, do not rely on the car to alert you to a leak.
I own a 2019 Nexo. Am I affected by more than one recall?
