Why are Nissan windshields and windows being recalled for glass problems?

4 NHTSA recalls · Nissan · Visibility · model years 2020–2025 (we track 2018 and newer) · newest 2025-11-21

Glass is the common thread here, in two forms. Two recalls involve glass that can come off the car: the 2020 Altima, Maxima and Leaf, whose rear window may not stay properly secured, and the 2024 Murano, where the wrong primer was used on the left and right quarter glass so the panels can detach. The other two are Sentra windshields with air bubbles in the glass. On the 2024 Sentra the bubbles sit low on the driver's side and obscure the VIN, a labeling compliance problem; on the 2025 Sentra the bubbles are described as obscuring the driver's visibility, a Standard 205 glazing failure.

Warning signs to watch for

Is it safe to keep driving?

None of these four recalls tells owners to stop driving. The 2020 rear window and 2024 Murano quarter glass recalls are the serious ones — glass detaching at speed can cause a crash for you or the driver behind you — so book the replacement as soon as your dealer can take the car. The 2025 Sentra windshield bubbles obscure your view and should be looked at soon, but are not an emergency. The 2024 Sentra VIN recall affects nothing about how the car drives; the only real risk is missing a future recall notice.

What the free repair involves

Dealers replace the back window glass on the 2020 Altima, Maxima and Leaf, and replace both side quarter glass panels on the 2024 Murano. For both Sentra windshield recalls, dealers inspect the glass and replace the windshield if necessary. There is no software or over-the-air element to any of these, and all work is free of charge.

Common questions

What's the difference between the 2024 and 2025 Sentra windshield recalls?

Both involve air bubbles in the windshield glass. On the 2024 Sentra the bubbles sit low on the driver's side and obscure the VIN. On the 2025 Sentra the bubbles can obscure the driver's visibility, which is the more serious of the two.

Why does an unreadable VIN matter?

The VIN visible through the windshield is how the vehicle is identified from outside. Nissan's notice frames the risk as missing a future safety recall because the number cannot be read, not as any problem with how the car drives.

Can I tell if my Murano quarter glass is about to come off?

The recall points to incorrect primer used on the left and right quarter glass, which is not something you can see. Since both panels are replaced regardless, the practical step is scheduling the free repair rather than inspecting the glass yourself.
